Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the seas and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. Genesis1:26
In order for us to understand our true identity, we must start in Genesis where we discover that Adam was created in the image of God. He was the first son of God, created for the Father’s good pleasure. In Genesis the Bible tells us that God the Father would fellowship with His son, un-fallen Adam, in the cool of the day. Theirs was a loving relationship between Father and son and contained no element of fear. God provided everything for Adam, including the basics of food and shelter. Adam, like us today, was told to seek first the Father’s Kingdom and His righteousness and everything would be provided for him. And so it was. When Adam and Eve sinned, God the Father asked them, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”
So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life. Genesis 3:23
In their disobedience Adam and Eve hid from God. When we are living apart from God we always try to clothe, protect and feed ourselves because we are acting as if we are abandoned (fatherless) orphans. But the truth is we are not orphans, but sons and daughters of the King! Today many Christians have lost this truth about their identity. They are still living as orphans, wandering as if survival was dependent on them rather than as sons and daughters of our Heavenly Father, enjoying His protection and blessing. Are you living as an orphan or a chosen child of God?
